Introduction

I studied history at university, My professional interests are in taxation and in particular taxation relating to expatriates and internatonal executives. I want to use this blog to post on the historical background to some of the professional issues I come across and also on matters of general historical interest which I think might be interesting to talk about.

I'm interested in the social history of the Rideau Canal (Ottawa - Kingston), especially the "start-up" and early days. In that context, I came across James Sutton Elliott in your article on Weedon
    .
Do you have any more on Mr. Elliott, especially his early career (before 1840)? I have his career in Canada reasonably documented.

I have found many references to his post-Weedon career - embezzlement of funds, escape to the US, etc. and his death from typhus in New York City - August 23, 1860.

I know that he was married, but the reference that I have for the date and place is not secure. That is, it gives 3 February 1927 as the date, but no other information to confirm that it is the same James Sutton Elliott. The wife is said to be Elizabeth Probert - no other information.

There is some circumstantial evidence in another listing for Wales. There was a Moffatt-Probert wedding in 1840. The 8th child of this union was James Sutton Elliott Moffat, b. 4 March 1853, d. March 1854 in Wales.
The child's names are certainly unlikely to have been given by accident, but this is hardly conclusive to suggest that "our" J.S. Elliott was the groom back in 1827.
Incidentally, when JSE embezzled funds and escaped to America, he abandoned his wife and left with a 25 year-old actress, who claimed that she WAS his wife.

I'd appreciate any insight or assistance that you might be able to give.

    Cheers,

    Ed Bebee
